About us
What we aim to do
Our goal is to provide self-determination theory researchers with a single, continuously updated, citable source of meta-analytic evidence.
We believe meta-analytic infrastructure should be open — freely accessible to anyone working in SDT; transparent — with methodology and provenance visible at every level; and living — designed to grow alongside the literature it represents.
MetaSDT builds on the Meta-Analytic Research Domain (MARD) framework articulated by Pim Cuijpers, whose own living databases (e.g., Metapsy) have shown the value of unifying a field's evidence base into shared, continuously maintained infrastructure. We see this database as a parallel step for self-determination theory that will allow us to be exposed to the full weight of empirical evidence in this field. This type of infrastructure may also advance the method of knowledge accumulation beyond the current practice of individual publications.
We hope it will be useful for researchers planning their work, research synthesists conducting meta-research, and clearer communication of what the field has learned to audiences beyond academia.
Core team
The people and partners leading the design and ongoing development of MetaSDT.

Developed the living meta-analysis framework for SDT and leads the platform's research, design, and analysis programme.
The international hub for SDT scholarship, founded by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Collaborates on the database's scope, governance, and dissemination.

Leads the open-science infrastructure, design system, and engineering that powers the living meta-analysis platform.
Key collaborators
Researchers and advisors who contribute to the database's design, analyses, and theoretical scope.
Contributes to database design, taxonomic structure, and ongoing analyses of need satisfaction and frustration.
Brings methodological expertise in meta-analysis and applications of self-determination theory in workplaces.
Brings quantitative methods, automation, and data-feedback expertise to the platform's analyses and its continuously updating data pipeline.
Co-founder of self-determination theory with Edward Deci. Advises on the theoretical scope and direction of the database.
